These trees can be found in Asia and South America, but the original Dragon's Blood resin, traded for centuries along the 'Incense Route,' hails from the Dracaena cinnabari tree on the captivating island of Socotra. This historic resin has earned the moniker 'Medieval' Dragon's Blood due to its mention in ancient Greek and Medieval texts, formularies, and Pharmacopoeias.
The Dragon's Blood resins have unique compositions, each with its own character. Dracaena Cinnabari resin from Socotra has been cherished as a pigment, dye, and a durable lacquer, often used to impart a deep red finish to violins.
Today, Socotra Dragon's Blood is popularly used to create long-lasting, blood-red ink and as a potent incense for various rituals and ceremonies.
The fresh resin of D. Cinnabari initially lacks a scent, but when placed on hot coals as incense, it fills the room with its deep, rich, and sensuous aroma. Its notes resemble dark amber with a warm, nutty undertone, both calming and invigorating.
