Getting to know bay laurel
Bay laurel is the evergreen Laurus nobilis, a member of the laurel family. This entry concerns its leaves. Bayberry and cherry laurel are different plants; a shared common name does not make them substitutes. Check the botanical name when choosing a supply. 1
History & documented traditions
The Metropolitan Museum of Art traces laurel's symbolism of victory and enduring life and discusses Apollo and Daphne's story. The laurel crown belongs to this classical history. 2 Culpeper later assigned bay to the Sun and described protective beliefs surrounding the tree. 3
Spiritual uses
Bay offers a useful symbol for a goal you intend to pursue with commitment. Contemporary prosperity writing includes bay laurel among money-work herbs. 5 Its place in our reference guide brings together achievement, protection, and learning, while keeping the historical sources visible.

A practice for your own Book of Shadows
Write a clear goal on a whole bay leaf, or put a paper intention beside cut leaves in a closed jar. Keep it where you plan or work. Review your progress each week and record the next step. The leaf can remain intact; this practice does not require burning it. This is our suggested use of bay's symbolism.
