Getting to know chamomile
Our linked listing names Matricaria recutita, a synonym of Matricaria chamomilla, commonly called German chamomile. 1 Roman chamomile, Chamaemelum nobile, is a different species. An older text saying simply “chamomile” may not identify which species its author meant.
History & documented traditions
The Old English Nine Herbs Charm includes a plant name usually translated as chamomile. Hopkins's annotated discussion identifies it at the daisy-family level rather than treating the old name as a certain modern species identification. It offers a historical example of herbs used together with spoken words. 2
Spiritual uses
Modern practitioner sources connect chamomile with prosperity, peace, and sleep-related symbolism. A Llewellyn prosperity working groups it with solar herbs, while Gruben places it among Water herbs. 3, 4 The Sun and Water describe different symbolic relationships within those sources.

A practice for your own Book of Shadows
Keep dried chamomile in a closed jar beside your journal. Write about what would help you feel settled, then choose one manageable intention for the week. For prosperity work, make that intention specific: preparing a proposal, listing a product, or following up on an opportunity. This is our suggested practice.
